Deputy Chief Avery L. Moore is originally from Lawton, Oklahoma. He is a 26 year veteran of the Dallas Police Department and possesses an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix. He began his career with the Dallas Police Department as a patrol officer working in the Northeast Patrol Division. Passionate about teaching and mentoring, Deputy Chief Moore was selected to become an instructor at the Dallas Police Academy where he taught defensive tactics to recruit police officers. Deputy Chief Moore worked as a first line supervisor in the Communications Division, the North Central Patrol Division, and the Dallas Police Academy before his promotion to Lieutenant. Deputy Chief Moore was assigned to the Crime Scene Unit as the Commander. In addition, Chief Moore was the Traffic Section Commander. In that assignment, he was the Traffic Commander for the Texas State Fair. At this point in his career, Chief David O. Brown personally selected Chief Moore to be a Texas Legislative Representative for the department. Prior to being reassigned to Northeast Patrol, Chief Moore was assigned to SWAT as the SWAT Commander. Deputy Chief Moore was the SWAT Commander the day of the attacks against the Dallas Police and Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police on July, 7, 2016. He is currently the Commander of the East Patrol Division. Deputy Chief Moore is proud to lead and influence a positive culture in the patrol division where he served his first 16 years and considers it a privilege and an honor.
